Pathways for Lifestyle Medicine Certification for Physicians

Experiential

You have been ABMS/AOA board certified for 2+ years
Canadian physicians must be certified and registered to practice.
30 hours of online CME from an approved course
20 hours of event CME from an approved event or combination of approved events (note: may be earned in-person OR virtually from 2024 onward).

Educational

Completion of the Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC) or Completion of the Faculty Learner Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (FLMRC)
  • 40 hours of interactive virtual didactic material
  • 60 hours of application activities
  • 400 lifestyle medicine-related patient encounters including the 4 sub-components (nutrition, physical activity, stress/sleep/connection and substance use)
  • 10 hours of (Intensive) Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (ITLC or TLC) program experience
  • 10 hours of group facilitation experience
Completion of an ABLM–Approved Lifestyle Medicine Educational Equivalency Pathway
  • 100 hours of educational content
  • 100% of all ABLM competencies covered 
  • 400 lifestyle medicine-related patient encounters including the 4 sub-components (nutrition, physical activity, stress/sleep/connection and substance use)
  • 10 hours of (Intensive) Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (ITLC or TLC) program experience
  • 10 hours of group facilitation experience
Certification will only be issued after successfully passing a primary board exam, though the ABLM exam can be taken after your residency.
If selecting the Educational Pathway, you will be required to upload the Letter of Attestation from your Program Director indicating completion of the LMRC, FLMRC, or Equivalency
